What shapewear bodysuits actually do and do not do
Shapewear bodysuits are one of the most searched categories in women's fashion, and also one of the most misrepresented. The marketing language around them tends toward the dramatic. The reality is more practical and, in some ways, more useful than the claims suggest.
Compression levels and what they mean in practice
Shapewear bodysuits generally fall into three compression levels: light, medium, and firm. Light compression smooths without any noticeable pressure, which makes it comfortable for all-day wear but means it will not significantly change the silhouette under structured clothing. Medium compression is the most practical level for most people: it smooths, provides some support, and is comfortable for a full workday for most body types.
Firm compression provides a more visible smoothing effect but is not comfortable for extended wear for most people. It is better suited to a specific occasion than to daily use. The shapewear bodysuit in the Octave Mandate collection is medium compression, which is the level we recommend for everyday wear.
What construction actually means
A bodysuit is knitted in one piece rather than assembled from cut panels. This eliminates the seam lines that would otherwise show through fitted clothing. The trade-off is that construction limits the shaping that can be built into the piece, because shaping in knitwear comes from changes in tension and stitch structure rather than from cut and seam placement.
Flat-lock stitching, which is used at the edges of pieces, lies flat against the skin rather than creating a ridge. This is the detail that makes the difference between a piece that works under a fitted dress and one that does not.
Realistic expectations
A medium-compression bodysuit will smooth the silhouette under fitted clothing and reduce the visibility of underwear lines. It will not significantly change body shape, and it is not designed to. If you are looking for a piece that provides support and a smooth line under a fitted dress or tailored trousers, it will do that well. If you are expecting a dramatic transformation, the piece will disappoint.
The shapewear bodysuit in the current collection comes in three skin-tone shades. The fit note on the product page covers the compression level and the gusset width in detail.
